about flag 07
The seventh Cleveland flag redesign, like number six, utilizes the red, white and blue color palette and stars and stripes motif of the American and Ohio flags. This creates a common theme amongst all three flags and establishes the new Cleveland flag as the third in a series of related patriotic flag designs.
The Cleveland flag redesign features two red and two white stripes on a blue field. On the fly side, twelve white stars adorn the flag.
The blue field is for pride. The red stripes are for perseverance. The white stripes are for community.
Each of the twelve white stars represent a different element from Cleveland’s history.
The first star at the top left is for Lake Erie. The second star to the right is for the region’s greenspaces, called the Metroparks. The third star in the top row is for the Cuyahoga River, which winds north through Cleveland and into Lake Erie.
The fourth star, the first on the second line, is for downtown Cleveland, the Terminal Tower and Public Square. The fifth is for Cleveland’s west side. The sixth star is for the city’s east side.
The seventh star is for the steel and manufacturing industry that built Cleveland. The eighth star is for Cleveland’s place as the home of rock ‘n’ roll and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The ninth is for the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, founded in 1921.
The tenth star, first in the fourth row, is for the Cleveland Museum of Art, established in 1913. The eleventh star is for the Cleveland Orchestra, founded in 1918. The twelfth, and final star, is for the generations of people who call Cleveland home. More than any historical event, industrial accomplishment or natural resource, it is the people of Cleveland that make the city great.
The seventh Cleveland flag redesign is built on a 1:5 grid. See how this new Cleveland flag compares to other Ohio city flags.
